Will mentioned that he is on Ubuntu. He *might* be running AV (Clam is a 
possibility), and if he is, it would probably be to ensure that he 
didn't pass along any infected files to unsuspecting Windows users 
(infected files he would have likely received from *other* Windows 
users). :-) Surely, though, there's no moneydance.exe...

Excellent catch on the audio suggestion, Kevin.

As disabling the sound seems to have done it, what build of ALSA are you 
running (assuming you are indeed using ALSA for your audio driver)? This 
could be some conflict with access to the audio hardware. Have you seen 
any other apps which act strangely when trying to access the audio (try 
playing a YouTube video and opening, say, your MP3 player app to start 
something, and see what disaster results (if you're as curious as I).
