I was really sort of joshing with Kevin concerning the AV stuff. I don;t normally run Clam on anything but mail servers, and not normally on Linux workstations or on my eComStation (OS/2) boxes in the field (client sites) and in my own office. On Windows, of course, that's an entirely different matter! If you aren't seeing this issue anywhere else, it pretty much clears ALSA (which is a good thing), and points in the direction of the JVM, perhaps. No need to dig any deeper if you're satisfied with the workaround, obviously.
