Thanks for taking it in the spirit in which it was intended. :-)

Linux (and Mac, even before OS X) uses a file attribute to specify an 
executable vs a non-executable file. So, with the proper permissions, 
someone could set even a non-executable file to executable (it won't 
work, but it would be like going to a DOS machine and renaming 
CONFIG.SYS to CONFIG.EXE, except that a DPS box will likely hang trying 
to execute an obviously *not* executable file, and a Linux box will just 
curse at you on the command line).

To change such permissions from a Linux terminal (command prompt), one 
uses the chmod (change mode) command, and usually with the syntax:

chmod nnn filename

where nnn refers to a combination of numbers representing various 
attributes for owner (of the file), group, and others (in Linux, a 
particular user may take ownership of a file, and as such, his - or her 
- privs may differ, e.g., only the owner may have read/write privs, 
whereas the Users group may be able to read it).

Complicated, I know, but it's stuff like this which makes Linux so well 
hardened.

The value for read, write, and executable is "7", so if I wanted to set 
a file as executable for everyone, I would use:

chmod 777 moneydance

(Assuming I had a file named moneydance. Typically, shell scripts - 
batch files - have an extension of ".sh", but this is merely for 
convention. A shell script must still be chmodded - and yes, we usually 
pronounce that just like it's spelled: "che-modd-ed"- to executable.)

Many people find that using the r, w, and x symbols instead of 
calculating the permission values are easier (see the link above). I've 
just been doing it so long that I don't much think about it anymore.
