Two differences - three actually but will get to that, I don't have the -m  
set at all and mdbin is not there - I chdir to the MD directory first and  
in fact the line that sets it produces nothing ie mdbin = ''

I said a third - I have multiple *.md files. My main one and a couple of  
really small ones. As this lives on my laptop I have a modified script  
that:

PGP decrypts a tar file of all the *.md files
Invokes MD
Tars up the *.md files
PGP encrypts them
Multiple overwrites of the *.md files with changing bit pattens.

I have done this for years. But half the time I open MD it is to check  
something "when did we buy the electric kettle that just failed?" and I got  
fed up with having to put the pass phrase in to re encrypt so yesterday I  
added code to check the number of *.md files their size and date and only  
reencrypt if something changes - the *md files still get wiped of course.
