I'm not convinced this error is related to debian specifically.

That bug report doesn't have enough information to tell what went wrong
with the build -- can you provide more logs from the "make" step? the
only error reports i see appear to be summary error reports (e.g. make
deciding to return 1 after some other error happened), and i suspect the
detail error reports (e.g. what the original error actually was) will be
the useful bits if you want clearer debugging.
