Who do you mean with the original open source people?

The original code of fontforge wasn't that great.  I remember before lots
of developers started contributing to fontforge that it was
hardly usable because it was so unstable!  It has really improved
a lot since then.  It's still unstable, but much less.

It's even on the FAQ that the original developer didn't want to
do QA.  Which is fine for a pet hobby project, but if you don't
do QA, you don't get quality!
