If not Ubuntu, which?

While tracking down another stupid little UI "dialog too small" nit, in
comparing the display under Cygwin vs. Ubuntu 14.04...

I noticed that radio button controls weren't displaying their little on/off
boxes at all on Ubuntu.  The control might work if clicking on the
associated label, but there wouldn't be any visual indication of on or off.

Check boxes didn't show anything until clicked to 'on' when they would now
show an 'X'.  Everything disappears on 'off'.

What other Linuxes do y'all recommend as a good standard for comparison of
display results?

Umm, and maybe this has some relation to the X windows grumpiness in
earlier postings here? :)

Under Ubuntu
  Element / Font Info / General / Has Vertical Metrics      checkbox shows
'X' or nothing
  Element / Font Info / Layers / Outline Font                   radiobutton
will not confess!
