The Number of The Beast

Can we talk about assigning a real version number to this release?
Timestamps are interesting to developers, but they're quite unhelpful to
users and potential users. As a matter of fact, they merely duplicate
information everyone already has: the release date.

What they don't communicate is how much has changed since the last -- or
any other prior -- release, whether or not the new version is significant
or a minor patch, whether it's stable and production-ready, or whether or
not there are important API, ABI, UI, or dependency changes to be aware
of.

There are lots of significant changes in Fontforge compared to the last big
milestone many people remember. If we make that clear, starting with what
we "call" this release, then we can make a statement about this release's
usefulness and its potential usefulness to users. If we just timestamp it,
we run the risk of that message getting lost. Which would be a real missed
opportunity, as well as underplaying all the hard work that the development
team has put in over the course of the last two years.

What number would be appropriate is not for me to say. But this is an
important release; I think what people say when they talk about it ought to
reflect that.
