removing glyphs and encoding from otf font

How do i remove glyphs completely from an otf font? I've tried Encoding>detach and remove glyphs but then i get red question marks at the top and when i generate the font, the font appears as boxes. The font has two different styles of numbers: oldstyle and tabular. When i type numbers in a program it automatically selects the oldstyle numbers. I want it to select the tabular numbers instead.
