cross build freetype for Linux/Mingw64 environment

I installed the mingw64 environment on Linux with the source code on
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw-w64. Is it possible to
cross-build freetype for mingw64 with the officially supported make
build system? It seems to always build for the unix platform with the
typical build instructions.
