Running ftview does not bring up a GUI

This is probably a silly question, and I may not have pointed FreeType demo programs correctly to the X11 libraries. When I run ftview or ftgrid this way, no GUI pops up. What am I missing? Some help with my setup would be helpful../ftview 10 ../../freetype/tests/data/As.I.Lay.Dying.ttf FreeType Glyph Viewer - press ? for help-Sauparna
