This shou= ld be=20 interesting. So, two things. When platform, and what platform. They kind of overlap. The impression I got at xdevconf was that smaller is better. The impressio= n I=20 get from the archives is that the platform should define those pieces which= =20 are baked and stable. However, I also got from xdc that the package set=20 under consideration for the platform is: fontconfig, gstreamer, dbus, hal,= =20 cairo, maybe pkgconfig. Cairo worries me. If we're explicitly not using the platform for technolog= y=20 pimping, then I have trouble reconciling the ideas of "this is stable baked= =20 technology" and "this includes Cairo". I understand that Cairo has existed= =20 in various forms for some time and has some interesting apps already, but=20 it's currently going through major API changes, it is not adopted by toolki= ts=20 now, and its 1.0 as I understand it is being timed to coincide with Gnome=20 2.12 this summer. To me this doesn't sound like baked software. fontconfig and pkgconfig I can accept. The other three I don't know a lot= =20 about and would appreciate some input on. Likewise for specs I'm not=20 particularly informed which ones are good. So, toolkit people: come up with a list of software and specs that: =2D you depend on for interop =2D you can deal with supporting until at least the next major revision of = your desktop =2D you anticipate being baked by (say) June I expect the specs list to be much longer than the software list here. Pimping happens on its own. No worries there. Cool stuff will get used. = The=20 need for a platform is the need for a stable base above X but below the=20 toolkit. So let's make one, a small one probably, and start moving forward. =2D ajax --nextPart1275345.pRRAhhW4sk Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQBCMfM4W4otUKDs0NMRAtfwAJ0aN3qQO/XYSr9g+kDJs1AlHZAETACfRept Ktw2ho/FQ1RxUuS6yL1YFds= =cEHj -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart1275345.pRRAhhW4sk-- --===============1040648982== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline _______________________________________________ platform mailing list [email protected] http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/platform --===============1040648982==--
