Ah.  That will be the source of your ugly glyphs then.  FreeType (both CVS 
and fedora) disables the bytecode interpreter that makes TrueType fonts 
look decent.  XFree86 4.3 and earlier enabled it.  You might want to
build FreeType with the bytecode interpreter enabled; that requires 
editing a header file in the FreeType source code.

As for the weird sizes, that's likely a 75dpi/100dpi issue.  Try '-dpi 
100' when starting the server, and make sure your font path is set to 
reference the 100dpi directory before the 75dpi one.
