VESA RandR

I've done quite a bit reading and searching with regards to trying to get my 
laptop to have the capability to rotate with RandR.  Throughout my reading, 
it appears to me that I should have the capability to rotate if I'm using the 
Vesa X server.  However, it doesn't.  I was wondering if this should work and 
if there is something special I have to do to make this work.  Basically I'm 
looking for any way to make my Toshiba table (3505) rotate without resorting 
to using the Xvnc hack that enable randr with vnc.

I apologize if this RandR subject has been covered in the past, but I have 
spent the evening reading and haven't found anything to answer my question 
yet.
