I guess the mode lib would have to be chip specific since most chips have different ways of handling crtcs and lvds/tmds controllers not to mentions DDC and such. vesa is pretty limiting... Is kdrive really a good basis for the "new xserver"? It seems to me that all we are doing is just re-writing drivers that look, for the most part like existing xfree86 drivers, but with less functionality by design. why not just start with the existing xfree86 drviers and just re-arrange them to mirror kdrive, if that's where we want to go. then we'd start off with a decent feature set off the bat. Plus it would be prety easy to add a lot of the features we are looking for to the existing drivers it just happened that xfree86 did not provide the framework for these features. It just seem like we are duplicating a lot of work for little gain right now.
