Building window managers and other X apps

I just built a machine that did not have xfree installed.  I built the
xserver and it looks like everything is okay but I had a question about
building a window manager.

The problem i am having is that the build process looks for Intrinsic.h
so the build process stops.  Has anyone else successfully built X
applications using Xserver?
