Exactly so: I remember the basic face to face X11 design meetings.
Graphics for business applications was all that was intended.
The hope was replacement within 5 years by something better.
As it is, we put too much in, by people who understood systems
and window systems, but not graphics.

We were smart enough not to touch a 3D API.

But then everything got frozen by the OpenGL/Phigs wars...
