OK, so I'm basically an idiot when it comes to X - but why does ./configure 
die if it can't find xdmcp.pc?

Hmm...from this mail:

it looks like xdmcp.pc is produced in the process of building xlibs...  Isn't 
that a bit backwards - that the server can't compile without the libs?

Doesn't it also defeat somewhat the idea of splitting the repositories up?
