Xfree86, Nvidia and ATI

I am curious of how all of this wonderfull discussion is going to play out in the real world of Xfree86, Nvidia and ATI. Nvidia and ATI seem set on releasing binary only drivers. Has anyone talked to them about changing the driver so that OpenGL and video modes can be used outside of X? How is all of this work going to relate to Xfree86? Is it going to be fed back in? Or is Xfree86 going to be abandoned by fd.o based desktops? Thanks John
