Well, from what I know (I only really know about D3D 1 to 7), the ability to
do direct access to the ZBuffer is not really present anymore in D3D8 (or at
least it's limited in some ways).

But the feature will still be present in the drivers for all 'legacy' games
using older versions of D3D (the most famous exemple being 'Grim Fandango').
