Upgrading from Advancemame 0.71 to 0.87

I recently got pressured into upgrading my cabinet
(www.danvan.com/arcade) to version 0.87 by a friend who just *had* to
play Raiden 2 (not available in 0.71). :) I haven't paid any attention
to this box for over a year because it's just hummed along nicely!
Anyway, I have tried to "upgrade" (by copying my RC files over to the
new installation) and also tried starting from a new clean config and
have no luck. My system is:

Arcade monitor
P3 667
Diamond Viper PCI 4mb video
128mb RAM (more available)
Win 98 SE in DOS mode
J-Pac

This has been working PERFECTLY up to now (with the exception of some
of the larger games obviously, which is fine by me).

No matter what I do I can't get the video modes to work properly for
the majority of games, and when it does work the games don't play
properly - sound and video both slow and speed up and rarely stay at
normal speed for more than a few seconds. I am still using the ROMS
from 0.71, but the games I was testing with surely haven't changed:
Street Fighter 2, Wonder Boy, etc.

Any ideas on what may be causing this? Any tips on making this a
smooth upgrade? Attached are the current working 0.71 configs.

I am thinking of migrating to Linux instead of Win98SE. I have a few questions:

1. how do others log in to linux on an arcade machine? Can you set
Linux to not ask for a username/password, or do you set Advmame to
load during boot so that's not a problem?

2. will X-Windows display on an arcade monitor without additional hardware?

3. Are there any particular Linux releases recommended or not
recommended? I am leaning towards Red Hat 9 or Fedora Core 2 as I'm
familiar with them. Any problems with these?

4. Can anyone refer me to any good resources on all of this?

I am thinking of replacing the P3 667 with a P3 933 I have lying
around, and upgrading the RAM to 256Mb. Will I get much performance
increase out of this or am I wasting my time?
