Re: All-in-one motherboard for AdvanceCD?

That is tough....

I am running an "all in one" board in my cabinet with linux.  I wouldn't 
recommend using AdvacnedCD since it is so dated and you will no doubt want 
to customize a ton of things down the road...on a straight Linux machine it 
is much easier.

At any rate, here are my suggestions...your mileage may vary...
1.  You want to run the "Frame buffer" video drivers...this is the future.
2.  You want to run ALSA Kernel Sound Driver...this is the future.
2.  You want to run a P4 MB/CPU vs P3...the biggest bang for the buck.
3.  You want to run the 2.6 kernel...this is the future.

Intel MB info:
The video drivers are specific to chipset.  The old P3 MB's were called 
intel 81x drivers...so the 810 and 815 were the same driver.  This kernel 
driver is in 2.6 kernel but not in 2.4.  The new P4 intel chipsets are the 
830/845/852/855/864 (and maybe higher)...and there is a FB driver in the 2.4 
Kernel...but not the 2.6.  Via and SIS chipsets are too flakey for me so I 
ignore them...but might server you will.

Intel Sound:
You really want ALSA support in the Kernel.  But (Again) the Kernels are 
quirky....and the MB's even quirkier.  Most Intel manufactured boards use 
the "Intel ICH (i8xx)" driver...but I have had bad luck with the 2.4 kernel 
not recognizing it...and leaving it as "Multimedia audio controller: Intel 
Corp.: Unknown device 24c5 (rev 01)"...luckily the SDL setting picks it up 
using other software, not the ALSA kernel driver.  The MB quark is that 
there is much more variance on sound chips on intel motherboards than the 
video.  You might have Yamaha...etc.  Read up on the MB...then read up on 
the Kernel readme's and change log's.

Bottom line:
I am pretty sure any intel chipset "all-in-one" MB will work with the 2.4 
kernel...and maybe the 2.6 with some help.  I am pretty sure the AdvanceCD 
kernel is 2.4.

VIA, SIS, nVidia, you are on your own...but I am pretty sure they will work 
too.

Cheap MB:
I haven't seen a discussion, but from my experience, the P4 (or AMD 
equivalent) are the best bang for the buck...and most compatible.  P4 MB 
(LAN, Sound and Video) is <$50 and a CPU is about the same....they you just 
mount the board on the side of the cabinet with stand-offs and wire things 
in...no worry about cards falling out of the MB since there aren't any.

Price:
$50 MB (Video, Sound, LAN)
$50 CPU+Fan
$50 Power Supply
$50 80gig HD
$50 256meg(or more) RAM
= $250 DONE!...until you buy the monitor and Cabinet, ugh!

BTW I my strong advice for the PC MB in a cabinet is to use a J-Pac, I-Pac 
or Opti-Pac from here:
