Andrea,
I am not a Linux user. I use Windows. In concept, I absolutely love the
idea of makeusb. All my ROMs together total nearly 10GB and it would be
amazing to make a single bootable partition onto which I can put all my games.
Currently, I have three bootable DVD+R's, split up A through H, I through R, and
S through Z. It would, of course, make a lot more sense to have a USB hard
drive with all my ROMs on it. Unfortunately, it appears I'm limited to a 1GB
partition! That's only a fraction of what a DVD can store!
Andrea, you've done some amazing work. Booting from the DVD+R's is
absolutely great. It's wonderful using a Linux OS that leaves oodles of system
resources for MAME to use. All I need to make the perfect gaming PC is to make a
bootable hard drive partition that is at least large enough to contain all my
ROMs.
I really don't know anything about Linux; I really wish I did. I think it
would be a simple task for someone fluent in Linux to accomplish what I'm
trying to do. I'm currently running WinXP and it's absurd to load such a r
esource hog before starting up MAME. If only makeusb would make an 11GB partition,
I would create the partition with my standard IDE hard drive (which is
currently hooked up to an external USB2 enclosure) then use it as the internal
hard drive of another PC, which would be devoted to nothing but MAME.
I feel like this is so close, but yet so far. I love the way AdvanceCD
boots. I can get more than 1GB on a DVD, but not on a hard drive, and it's
killing me. I suppose AdvanceCD would work on a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD writer, but
those are financially way out of my reach. This ol' $60 IDE HD should be able
to do the trick, in theory.
I'm sorry if I'm coming across as an ignoramus. It's just killing me that I
can't make this work :-(
