I also had (actually still have) the power-relay for the monitor connected to the parallel port. Under dos i used the utilities from the advcab-package to set an appropriate mode on bootup, and displaying a PCX-image. Then using portio i turned on the monitor. In this case the monitor would be in an acceptable mode long before advmenu starts.
