Thanks Gore.  I must say that I gave up on Advancemame and went to MamePlus
and would recommend others to do the same if they have performance problems.
MamePlus was MUCH faster on my 2 Ghz machine.  I could run many of the image
enhancement routines (lq2, hq2) without the annoying visual and audio
problems from Advancemame.

My system uses a 1280 x 1024 LCD which is admittedly not the ideal config
for Advancemame.

Ok Bill, I´ll give some help to improve ADVMAME performance:

1 - first step: VIDEO CARD

    - Try to reduce the advmame video size! All videocards have performance 
loss when running in big resolutions.
    - Try to reduce the number of colors. Only some arcade games use 32 bit 
color. High number of colors
    can reduce the performance too.
    - Go to control panel / video and adjust video performance to the 
highest.
    - Install new drivers for your videocard.
    - Install the latest directx. (9.0c I think)

2 - second step: SOUND CARD:

    - Install new drivers for your soundcard.
    - Install the latest directx. (9.0c I think)
    - Go to control panel / Sound  and adjust sound performance to the 
highest.

3 - third step: YOUR COMPUTER

    - Ensure you have at least 512 MB of RAM if you use Windows XP 
Professional Edition and Norton Antivirus. Both
of them use a lot of RAM.
    - Don´t try to do miracles. Only run ADVMAME and close all other 
applications. If  you have a lot of icons on your
    system tray, try to shutdown each one.
    - Advmame filters HQ and LQ are very heavy for the CPU. I think you can 
put a lower resolution (640x480x32) and
    run with these filters. If you want bigger resolutions, buy a powerfull 
videocard, more and faster RAM memory and a faster     CPU too!
