If you've got a Geforce FX or newer nvidia card, then interlace modes will
work perfectly. So for quake (or your desktop) you could try something like

lrmc 640 480 60 -i -cga

as far as fracational stretching is concerned, the explanation is a little
complicated. Advancemame supports mixed and integer stretching (among
others). When you use fracational, lrmc calculates the best mode for a
mixed setup, that is integer stretching of the horizontal resolution, and
fractional stretching of the vertical resolution. lrmc's default, however,
is integer stretching, so if you want advancemame's mixed stretching just
use the fractional stretch option.

But here is where things gets tricky -- unlike arcadevga and advancemame,
lrmc always maintains the correct aspect ratio on underscanned images when
using integer stretching (or no stretching). Images are never distorted.
Take 224 line games on an arcadevga, there's a small border on the top and
bottom of games, but no border on the right and left. This is wrong. The
image is incorrectly displayed. lrmc adjusts the modeline so that the
aspect ratio is correct. So the 7% border on 224 line games at the top and
bottom is mirrored on both the right and left sides, that is, all the
borders are equal, top = bottom = left = right.

This makes the configuration in Advancemame complicated to say the least,
because Advancemame won't select the correct mode if you're using lrmc's
default. You'll have to force the correct mode by using the -s option and
copying the correct configuration to your advmame.rc file. If you use
fractional streching, then you don't have to do anything. Advancemame will
automatically select the correct mode.

Hopefully this weekend I'll find the time to post a set of configuration
files for Advancemame and X11. Once I do, it'll all make sense. Btw, I
just uploaded a very minor bug fix release.

As far as tweaking your modelines, there's xvidtune. lrmc and xvidtune work
together flawlessly, however, it's a far more cumbersome setup than
advv.exe. Copy, paste, reboot X, it's all very annoying, but for right now,
it's all that works.
