Do you use udev or devfs? (Most likely the configuration of either of these needs to be modified to fix your problems). Do a 'mount' and check if a separate filesystem is mounted on /dev. If you have something like: udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,nosuid) you are running udev (it's the tmpfs that is important here).
