Super Mario Bros stymied

Hi there AdvanceMAME folks,

I've been trying to get any version of Super Mario Bros working on my
(debian etch Linux) AdvanceMAME cabinet and I'm stymied.  If anyone has
any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.  Here are the ways that I'm
blocked so far...

1 - Playchoice
  My first thought was to use the pc_smb rom.  This *does* work, but
  everytime I start the game, I have to remap the game's "Enter" button to
  one of our buttons so I can choose "Super Mario Brothers" as the game
  I want to play.  I shouldn't have to remap a key everytime I want to
  play the game (we use this MAMEcabinet at parties, and we don't
  leave the PC's keyboard out).  The reason I can't specify the remap in
  the advmame.rc file is that the playchoice's "Enter" button isn't one
  of the "DIGITAL" values AdvanceMAME allows in it's "input_map[]"
  command.  I'd love for someone to show me that I'm wrong about that.

2 - AdvanceMESS
  I can get advmess to run the Super Mario Bros roms from the command
  line, and there are sound emulation problems, but I can kind of live
  with that.  The problem is AdvanceMENU keeps telling me "Emulator 
  advmess without rom files, ignoring it," so I can't get AdvanceMENU to
  show even show me the games in order to play them.  Since the games
  play without specifying paths on the commandline, I'd assume that I
  have them in the right place (/usr/local/share/advance/image/nes).

3 - ZSNES
  I know this list isn't the place to talk about other emulators, but I
  can't quite get the console version of this to work.  I get a low
  intensity, green-only, non-responsive image of the ZSNES GUI.

If anyone can give me any suggestions on how to move forward on any of
these options, I'd greatly appreciate it.
