I recall that getting the monitor timing right was tricky, but the end
results were worth the trial-and-error with the advcfg and advv utilities.
I recall something about the vesafb driver not being capable of the
fine-grained control possible in card-specific fb drivers, for what that's
worth.  I used a multisync arcade monitor with much lower resolutions than
yours, but if you following the docs on setting up the monitor settings, you
are likely to have success.
