I've used the net_read_filter for some pre-processing stuff.  I needed
to get at it before anything else, and something (I don't remember
exactly, maybe it was prompt detection) always happened first so I
couldn't use priorities.  Is there another/better way that I should do
this?  Why remove the hook?  Is there a performance hit for having a
hook if nothing registers with it?
