I wrote a perl script that constantly checks the file for changes and
then displays the group data in a more friendly manner (it tells me
how much damage each person has taken, what percentage of health they
have left, and also only prints output for people who are not at full
hitpoints).

I imagine this would work in your situation, but i'm not sure.
