Hrm...  I launched on a telnetlib re-write, too, but abandoned it for some 
good reason I can't think of right now.

I did a quick (very quick) search for "telnetlib" in the mailing list 
archives and bumped into this message:

Not sure if that was the latest development or not, but it might explain 
why I ditched my telnetlib net.py replacement and why you ditched yours. 
though what you're saying now sounds different.
