Here's a re-send of a message of mine from a few months ago. It's more of a
strategy introduction. Someone else posted a message around then advocating
fast construction of Dreadnoughts, which I found interesting, too.

Unless a planet is "close" to your preferred gravity (1.0) and temperature (72
degrees F) you will have to pay upkeep money every turn ($7500). You can
terraform a planet to get it closer to 72, but you can't change the gravity.
Once a planet is in range it you will have a population boom, and as the
population grows the upkeep will go down, until you are eventually making a
profit.

Potentially profitable planets are in the range of 0.4 - 2.5 G, but at the
extremes it can take forever to reach profitablility. 0.5 - 2.0 is more
reliable. The closer a planet is to 1.0 G the farther off from 72 degrees you
can be. A 1.0 G planet can have a baby boom from -40 to 200 degrees or so.
Every player has a different preferred gravity/temp combo.

When I start a game I look for planets I can quickly turn to profitablity.
Peferably in the range of 0.6 to 1.8 G, -50 to 210 degrees, depending on the
gravity. There's no point in colonizing a 1.0 G planet with a temp of -300
early in the game. It's just going to suck money forever.

Once you've got an economy going with a few profitable planets you'll be in
better shape in general. You do need to dump a lot of money into technology
research to keep up, especially against high-level enemies.

The heart of the game, of course, is metal. It's the only limited commodity, so
if you control it you'll win. Even if you can't do anything about mining it
all, keep your enemies from getting it and they'll be at a disadvantage.

When an enemy seems to be getting too powerful (check the "Enemies and Allies"
list for the current ranking) go and smash some of their profitable planets. If
you can cripple their economy, even without holding the planets you attack,
you'll slow them down.
