Show ship info?

Pardon my utterly uninformed question, but I just started playing 
and don't seem to see this answered anywhere:

What does the "Show Ship Info" menu item (on the "Ships" menu) do?  
I've tried selecting a ship, a fleet, and a planet, then 
choosing "Show Ship Info," but nothing ever seems to happen.

A related question: once a ship is in transit to another planet, is 
there any way to access that ship so that I can alter its orders or 
destination?
