That wouldn't be significantly different.

However, a simple port to use as a reference that exists even in the
development versions of GCC is Moxie.  The entire port is a few thousand
lines of code.

Moxie also has a blog on http://moxielogic.org/ that might contain
useful info (though I am not sure as I haven't really read it).

Joining the GCC development community on IRC might also be useful.  It
has quite a few people (but holidays are ongoing, so it's less active
now).
