Where I got the following answer:

"I am not a Mac user so I cannot try this but Google AI gives a
prescription in answer to the question in the subject line."

which got me (just the opening lines):

"To install GCC on an Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) Mac, you should use the 
Homebrew package manager. Because GCC packages are version-tied in 
Homebrew, you can easily pull a recent version (such as GCC 14 or 15) by 
running brew install gcc. Building GCC 16.1 from source manually is also 
an option."
