Now,

163269   22.8358  libgcj.so.10.0.0         libgcj.so.10.0.0         _Jv_platform_gettimeofday()

calls to _Jv_platform_gettimeofday() are almost a quarter (!) of the
total runtime.

I think that's your fault.  Change your Timer.startTime to
something a little less aggressive.  :-)
