@Tom Yes that sounds like the correct short-term workaround.

Longer term, GDB and the other (very few) projects affected need to stop
relying on the kernel FOLL_FORCE behavior to inspect process memory, at which
point the kernel can remove that flag.

Last time I checked, everyone was open to this, however nobody is actually
working on it. :)
