I tried your patch -- I like it better than mine actually -- but
I still sometimes see the message in the logs:

(gdb) run
Starting program:
C:/Users/itmgr/sandbox/x86_64-windows64/gdb_version-head_test/tmp/test/gdb-TS-dydghej7/CA24-016__starting_program_msg/simple.exe 
No unwaited-for children left.
