My version of the manual doesn't seem to have such a problem.

I have:

  'Debugging with GDB', Ninth Edition, for GDB version 5.3.
  December 2001 [sic]

Please check the first page of your manual.  What GDB version and date
does it say?

I have gdb.pdf.gz from that directory.
