Testing strategy followed by gdb and its simulator

gdb comes with an instruction-set simulator, and both I presume, would be tested against test-suites. I have seen a folder 'test-suite' on downloading gdb. But could not find any documentation on those test-suites explaining the strategy behing them, or whether they follow some standards.
