Start Gramps from the command line. More detailed diagnostics are echo'd there. You can copy that info in a follow-up posting.
(Do not use the Gramps Console icon. If Gramps spontaneously terminates on a crash, then the associated console also terminated and the diagnostics are lost.)

I went back to a backup last night, and Gramps crashed in the same way. 
I haven't worked on this item for some years, so I'm worried that I 
might have exposed a long-standing problem with my Gramps tree. I hadn't 
accessed the item causing the problem since the back-up.

Check and repair ran clean apart for 1 family relationship mended.

I have no unused objects, and Media Verify ran clean.

The file that the media item is pointing to opens normally in my jpg viewer.

I'd be grateful for advice on what to do now.
