I use a multipart filter.

Filter 1A
Ancestors of <person>

Filter 1B
Descendants of <filter> match (Filter 1A)
People matching the <filter> match (Filter 1A)
Option:At least one rule must apply

I add Filter 1 back in to make sure the end line people are included. These
filters do not include spouses so...

Filter 1C
Spouses of <filter> match (Filter 1B)

And Finally the filter to actually run

Filter 1D
People matching the <filter> match (Filter 1B)
People matching the <filter> match (Filter 1C)
Option:At least one rule must apply

A variation to Filter 4 also adds the Parents and siblings of Spouses (all
in-laws) and any step children which may or may not be desired.

Filter 1D-X
People matching the <filter> match (Filter 1B)
People matching the <filter> match (Filter 1C)
Parents of <filter> match (Filter 1C)
Siblings of <filter> match (Filter 1C)
Spouses of <filter match (Filter 1C)
Children of <filter> match (Filter 1C)
Option:At least one rule must apply


So these are my Filter1, The Filter 1D-X I only run when building a
Narrative Web page. The extended family of spouses do not show up in most
traditional reports other than the parents. "...daughter of John Smith and
Mary Jones."
