In the Windows version, you CAN collapse the group/node with the active record using the pop-up Context Menu. Nick may be seeing different behavior in his Linux GUI.
Unfortunately, the context keybinding (either shift-F10 or the "Menu Key") only work with Text objects & active text-entry fields in Gramps. They do nothing if the selected object is a table row.
Postings elsewhere on the net indicate that several different approaches to setting the gtk keybinding for a pop-up context menu did not work as expected.:

Yes. I don't think that you can collapse the group containing the active
person.
