You have to let {your choice of package manager} know which version of Debian you're using (again, obvs). Most people tend to use the code name for their preferred version of Debian (buster, stretch, jessie, etc.), and when Debian is updated to a new version, they perform a dist-upgrade. Some of us (more reckless types) prefer to stay on testing, or sid (unstable) and we use either 'testing' or 'sid' for version. This avoids the necessity for performing a dist-upgrade, but can have unforeseen side-effects. Using 'stable' for the example was a bad idea on my part, and should be ignored.
