Did you backup the dot directory; ie: ~/.gramps. That's where the configs and other important stuff are ~/.gramps/gramps51/gramps.ini grep gramps51/gramps.ini -e backup-path or view gramps.ini in a text editor and see where various preferences were set to. The database should be at... ~/.gramps/grampsdb grep gramps51/gramps.ini -e recent-file should return the last entry database used. (previous versions will be in that directory.)
