So, for example, when you want to import an in-law family from another tree, you can set up a filter (1) to select all the people that share an ancestor with a selected in-law, adding another one (2) that selects all spouses of the results of the first (1). And when you want to include in-laws of in-laws, there is another trick, which starts with selecting all people that are related to a gateway in-law. If you apply that right away, it may include lots of people on your own side of the family, if they are in the GEDCOM too, but you can prevent that by disconnecting the gateway cousin, the one that you already have, from his other relations. This is a nice way to prevent the is related filter from including those that you already know, provided that there are no other gateways in the imported tree. This may require some experimenting, so I recommend to import the output data.gramps into another empty tree to see whether you really like it. And if you do, import it into your main tree and merge the gateway cousin(s).
