The English version of the Downloads page only has external links labeled "backports". I don't know enough about Linux or its various distribution approaches to write anything but... What do you think about writing up something that might help recruit volunteers in the backporting & testing that exceeds your bandwidth? Something that leads off with a brief (almost skeletal!) suggestion for newbies about enabling backports options. Then acknowledging the currently available backpost. Followed by the targets where you're seeking volunteers? No. It is not possible to officially upgrade to new releases of software (like Gramps) in Ubuntu, except for some special cases like Firefox & Chrome. This would make Ubuntu very unstable.
