Have saved I don't understand why you think that changes are not saved. Are you looking at XML files? The normal procedure for Gramps is, like Brian wrote, that changes are written to a database that sits in a numbered folder inside the hidden ./gramps/grampsdb folder. And with modern Gramps versions, that database can be BSDDB or SQLite or others, when you install extra drivers and database engines. And the most modern versions make automatic backups in your home folder. I'm using version 3.4.9 here, which is way older than 2018, and I can import any .gramps file created by that into the latest Gramps version, so I think that you should be able to do the same, simply by creating a new database with the database/family tree manager, whatever that is called in English, and importing your .gramps file into that. And if you're not sure about the Gramps version used for that file, you can always inspect the XML inside, by renaming the .gramps to .gz, unpacking that, and renaming the uncompressed .gramps to .xml, so that it is associated with your favorite XML viewer/editor. That should be all to get on board again.
