I suspect that everyone records their ancestral military service & losers differently. You'd need to be very consistent in how it was logged to write a useful custom filter. 

For instance, I added a Cause of Death Event. Those include KIA but there are other war losses: MIA, died in recovery, military loss to disease, POW death, death in service (exhaustion, etc.). And for many deaths, I have no proof it was war-related but the dates & locations imply that.

I do have 'Military Service' type Events recorded which helps too. But those records for my ancestors are likewise of varying quality.
